HDMI over Cat5e & Cat6 Extenders
HDMI over Cat5e & Cat6 Extenders
Transmit HDMI AV Signals over long distances via Ethernet Cables
HDMI over Cat5e & Cat6 Extenders
HDMI over Cat5e and Cat6 extenders allow HDMI audio and video signals to be transmitted over longer distances using a single category cable. Instead of running a long HDMI cable between the source and display, an HDMI extender uses a transmitter and receiver to send the signal over compatible Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6a cabling.
These HDMI extenders are suitable for connecting TVs, monitors, projectors and other HDMI displays to source devices such as computers, media players, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles and set-top boxes. Depending on the model, transmission distances can range from around 50m to 150m, with support for resolutions from 1080p through to 4K.
Our range includes HDMI over Cat6 extenders, HDMI over Cat5e extenders, 4K HDMI extenders, HDBaseT extenders, IR-enabled models and multi-receiver systems. Some models also provide ARC, HDMI loop-through, audio extraction, RS-232, USB KVM or Power over Cable functionality.
When selecting an HDMI extender, check the supported resolution, cable category, maximum transmission distance, refresh rate and additional features required for your installation.
What Is an HDMI over Cat6 Extender?
An HDMI over Cat6 extender is a transmitter and receiver system that sends HDMI audio and video signals over Cat6 network cable.
The transmitter connects to the HDMI source, while the receiver connects to the remote HDMI display:
HDMI source → HDMI transmitter → Cat6 cable → HDMI receiver → TV/projector
This allows HDMI signals to travel considerably farther than is practical with a standard HDMI cable.
Despite sometimes being called an HDMI over Ethernet extender, these systems do not necessarily require an Ethernet network. Many point-to-point HDMI extenders use a direct Cat5e or Cat6 cable between the transmitter and receiver.
HDMI over Cat5e vs Cat6
Both Cat5e and Cat6 cables can be used with compatible HDMI extenders, but the required cable type depends on the specifications of the individual extender.
Cat5e
- Suitable for many HDMI extension applications
- Commonly used for 1080p transmission
- Suitable for many existing structured-cabling installations
Cat6
- Higher bandwidth cabling than Cat5e
- Common choice for newer installations
- Used by many 4K and higher-performance HDMI extenders
Always follow the cable requirements specified for the particular HDMI extender. A product designed for Cat6 should not automatically be assumed to provide the same performance over Cat5e.
