Switch Mechanisms & Switch Mechs

Shop switch mechanisms and switch mechs for compatible Australian wall plates and electrical installations. Our range includes 16A two-way switch mechanisms, printed switch mechs, double-pole mechanisms, intermediate switches and specialist mechanisms for data and AV connections.

Switch mechanisms are the functional inserts installed into compatible wall plates, allowing different switching, connection and outlet configurations to be assembled to suit the installation. Depending on the application, you can choose from standard switching mechanisms, double-pole mechanisms, intermediate switches, RJ45 socket mechs, F-type mechanisms and TV coax mechanisms.

Choose the correct mechanism based on the required switching function, current rating, connection type, wall plate compatibility and installation requirements. Options include 10A, 16A, 25A and 35A mechanisms, as well as mechanisms available in different colours and configurations.

Our switch mechanisms are designed to suit our range of wall plates, with selected mechanisms also suitable for compatible Clipsal-branded wall plates. Always check the product specifications and compatibility before installation.

For mains electrical work, switch mechanisms should be installed by a suitably qualified electrician in accordance with applicable Australian electrical requirements.

What Is a Switch Mech?

A switch mech is the interchangeable mechanism or insert fitted into a compatible wall plate. It provides the actual switching or connection function, while the wall plate provides the surrounding mounting and finish.

Switch mechs are available for different applications, including two-way switching, intermediate switching, double-pole switching and data or AV connections. The correct mechanism must be matched to the compatible wall plate and installation requirements.

What Is a Two-Way Switch Mechanism?

A two-way switch mechanism is an electrical switch insert designed to control a light or electrical circuit from two different switch locations. When two compatible two-way switch mechanisms are correctly wired together, the same light can be switched ON or OFF from either location.

Two-way switch mechanisms are commonly used in stairways, hallways, bedrooms and rooms with multiple entrances. The mechanism is fitted into a compatible wall plate and must be selected according to the required current rating, wall plate compatibility and electrical installation requirements.

The term “two-way” refers to the switching arrangement rather than the number of lights the switch can control. For mains electrical installations, two-way switch mechanisms should be installed by a suitably qualified electrician.
