HDMI to DVI Converters

Connect compatible HDMI sources to DVI displays with HDMI to DVI converters and adapters from Aus Electronics Direct. HDMI to DVI connections can provide a digital video link between devices such as computers, laptops, monitors, projectors and other compatible AV equipment.

Choose the right solution for your setup, including HDMI to DVI-D cables, connector adapters and HDMI to DVI video converters. Check the DVI connector type, supported resolution, signal direction and audio requirements before purchasing.

DVI-D, DVI-I and DVI-A Explained

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) comes in three main types: DVI-D, DVI-I and DVI-A. The main difference is the type of video signal each connector is designed to carry.

Type Signal Digital Analogue Typical use
DVI-D Digital only ✅ ❌ Modern digital monitors and HDMI-to-DVI connections
DVI-I Digital + analogue ✅ ✅ Displays supporting both digital and analogue video
DVI-A Analogue only ❌ ✅ Older analogue display connections

DVI-D — Digital only

DVI-D carries a digital video signal only. It is the most relevant DVI type when connecting an HDMI source to a DVI display because HDMI and DVI can carry compatible digital video signals.

DVI-D is available in single-link and dual-link configurations, with dual-link providing greater bandwidth.

Typical example:

HDMI laptop → HDMI-to-DVI-D cable → DVI-D monitor

DVI-I — Digital and analogue

DVI-I can carry both digital and analogue video signals. The connector has additional pins that support the analogue signal.

This means a DVI-I port can potentially support a wider range of display connections, depending on the equipment and cable being used.

However, having a DVI-I connector does not automatically mean that every HDMI-to-DVI connection will work in every configuration. The actual signal type and equipment compatibility still need to be checked.

DVI-A — Analogue only

DVI-A carries analogue video only. It is much less common than DVI-D and DVI-I today.

Because HDMI is a digital interface, a simple HDMI-to-DVI-D cable is not the appropriate solution for converting HDMI to DVI-A. An appropriate active converter would be required if analogue conversion is necessary.

Which DVI type should you choose for HDMI?

For a typical HDMI source → DVI monitor connection, look for DVI-D compatibility.

The important distinction is:

HDMI → DVI-D = digital-to-digital connection

Whereas:

HDMI → DVI-A = digital-to-analogue conversion
