Choose the Right 18650 Battery
18650 Lithium-ion Batteries
Standard 18650 lithium-ion cells commonly have a nominal voltage of approximately 3.6V or 3.7V, depending on the manufacturer and cell specification. Available capacities vary by model. Check the cell's datasheet to confirm its voltage, capacity, continuous discharge rating and charging requirements.
High-Capacity 18650 Batteries
Higher-capacity cells can provide longer operating time in compatible applications, provided their discharge ratings and other electrical specifications meet the device requirements. Compare capacity in milliamp-hours (mAh), but do not select a battery on capacity alone.
Protected 18650 Batteries
Some 18650 cells include protection circuitry, often described as PCM or a protection circuit. Depending on the design, this circuitry can help protect against conditions such as overcharge, over-discharge and excessive current. Always verify the actual protection features and electrical ratings of the specific battery.
18650 LiFePO4 Batteries
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells have different voltage characteristics from conventional lithium-ion 18650 cells. Choose them only for equipment designed for their chemistry, voltage range and charging requirements.
How to Choose an 18650 Battery
Before purchasing, check the following specifications:
- Dimensions: Confirm the cell fits the battery compartment. Protected cells may be longer than unprotected cells.
- Capacity: Compare rated capacity in mAh or Ah to estimate the available energy.
- Voltage: Match the battery chemistry and voltage requirements of your equipment.
- Discharge rating: Check the manufacturer's continuous and peak current specifications against your application's requirements.
- Protection circuitry: Confirm whether the application requires a protected cell or uses a suitable external battery management system.
- Quantity and configuration: Determine whether you need individual cells, a multi-cell arrangement or a complete battery pack.
18650 Battery Chargers
Use a charger specifically compatible with the battery chemistry and cell configuration. Charging voltage, current and termination requirements must match the manufacturer's specifications. Do not charge damaged cells or use an unsuitable charger.
