1. What is a DC power lead?
A DC power lead is a cable used to transfer direct current (DC) electricity from a power supply, battery or other source to an electronic device. 2. What is the difference between a DC power cable and a DC power adapter?
A DC power cable connects a DC power source to a device, generally carrying the same voltage from one end to the other. A DC power adapter typically converts electrical power from one form or voltage to another, such as converting 240V AC mains electricity into a lower-voltage DC output. Some products called DC adapters are simply connector adapters, so always check their specifications to understand their function.
3. What is a 2.1mm DC power cable?
A 2.1mm DC power cable is a cable fitted with a DC barrel connector that has a 2.1mm internal diameter. It is commonly used for low-voltage electronics, LED lighting, routers and other devices powered by DC supplies. Check the connector's outer diameter as well, as many 2.1mm connectors have a 5.5mm outer diameter.

5. What is the difference between a 2.1mm and 2.5mm DC cable?
The main difference is the internal diameter of the DC barrel connector. A 2.1mm connector has a 2.1mm internal diameter, while a 2.5mm connector has a 2.5mm internal diameter. Both may have a 5.5mm outer diameter, making them difficult to distinguish by appearance alone. Using the wrong size can result in a loose connection or prevent the plug from fitting correctly.
6. How do I identify a DC power cable size?
To identify a DC barrel connector size, check the connector's outer diameter and internal diameter. These are commonly written as measurements such as 5.5mm × 2.1mm or 5.5mm × 2.5mm. You can measure the connector with a suitable calliper or check the specifications of the original power supply and device. Also confirm the connector length and polarity where relevant.
7. What is a DC power extension cable?
A DC power extension cable extends the distance between a DC power supply and an electronic device. It typically has a matching DC plug and socket at opposite ends, allowing an existing power lead to reach equipment positioned further away. Before choosing an extension, check the connector sizes, polarity, voltage and current requirements, as well as the cable length and wire specifications.
8. What is a DC power splitter cable?
A DC power splitter cable allows one compatible DC power output to connect to multiple devices or power connections. It commonly has one input connector and two or more output connectors, such as a 2.1mm DC plug-to-multiple-socket splitter. Splitter cables are useful for powering compatible LED lighting or electronic equipment from a shared supply.
9. Can I use a DC splitter cable for multiple devices?
Yes, provided the power supply, splitter cable and connected devices are electrically compatible. The power supply must provide the correct voltage and enough total current for all connected devices. Add together the current requirements of the devices and ensure the supply, cable and connectors are rated to handle the combined load. A splitter does not increase the available power or provide separate voltage regulation for each output.
10. What is a USB-to-DC power cable?
A USB-to-DC power cable connects a USB power source to a device with a DC barrel power input. One end typically has a USB-A connector, while the other has a DC plug such as a 2.1mm or 2.5mm barrel connector. These cables can be used with compatible low-voltage devices, but check the USB output voltage, available current and DC connector polarity before connecting equipment.
11. What is a USB-C-to-DC power cable?
A USB-C-to-DC power cable connects a USB-C power source to equipment that uses a DC barrel power input. Depending on the cable design, it may support standard USB power or USB Power Delivery (USB PD) voltage negotiation. Check that the USB-C charger, cable and device support the required voltage, current and wattage. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee that the cable will provide the correct DC output.
12. What is a DC plug-to-bare-wire cable?
A DC plug-to-bare-wire cable has a DC barrel connector at one end and exposed wire ends at the other. It is useful for custom wiring, connecting compatible equipment to terminal blocks or integrating DC-powered devices into an installation. Check the positive and negative wire identification, cable size, voltage and current rating before making connections. Insulate and secure all exposed conductors appropriately.
13. How do I check DC cable polarity?
Check the polarity markings on the power supply and the equipment before connecting a DC power cable. Many barrel connectors use centre-positive polarity, but centre-negative and other arrangements also exist. You can use a multimeter set to DC voltage to check the output polarity: place the probes across the connector's contacts and observe the reading.
